Schwartz Rounds, Freeland Lecture highlight busy week's slate

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.
Tuesday, June 4
Doris Whitaker, pastoral services director, will facilitate the Schwartz Center Rounds 2019 Series: "Are We Too Busy?" discussion, "Being Mindful of Mental Health: A Panel Discussion on Depression, Suicide Awareness and Prevention, and Resources That Make a Difference," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, in room CW 308 of the Classroom Wing.
Dr. Daniel C. Williams, associate professor of psychiatry; Dr. Danny Burgess, associate professor of psychiatry; Dr. Scott Rodgers, professor of psychiatry; Dr. Courtney L. Bagge, associate professor of psychiatry; and Dr. Sara Gleason, associate professor of psychiatry, will speak during the event.

AdebayoDr. Akeem A. Adebayo, UMMC preventive medicine fellow, will give the Department of Preventive Medicine presentation, "Overview of Mississippi Health Policy Fellowship," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, on the first floor of the New Guyton library.

AberdeinDr. Nicola Aberdein, anatomy and physiology lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Effect of Leptin on Bone Remodeling Independent of Body Weight In Vivo," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Friday, June 7
LundyDr. Douglas W. Lundy, an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, co-president of Resurgens Orthopaedics and president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, will give the annual Freeland Lecture, "Third-world Medical Missions," at noon on Friday, June 7, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.
The presentation is part of the UMMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation's Alan E. Freeland Research Lecture Series and Resident Research Day. The full event, scheduled from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m., also will include ortho intern talks and chief resident research presentations.

University Heart and Children's of Mississippi will host a free patient and family symposium, "1 in 100: Growing Up with Congenital Heart Disease," from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Classroom Wing.
The event will include a discussion of the challenges of growing up with congenital heart disease and the important of lifelong care, a tour of the Heart Center, an echocardiogram demonstration, information about insurance coverage and interaction with heart doctors.

SandbergDr. Kathryn Sandberg, professor and assistant chair of research in the Department of Medicine and director of the Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging and Disease at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology seminar, "Long-term Adverse Cardio-metabolic Consequences of Crash Diets and Other Causes of Periodic Inadequate Food Intake," at noon on Monday, June 10, in room 6A.

Monday June 10-Monday June 24
Doris Whitaker, UMMC pastoral services director, will deliver a three-part UMMC Everyday Wellness series on compassion on successive Mondays in June.
She will present "Where it Begins: Self-compassion" from 11 a.m.-noon on Monday, June 10 in classroom 4A; "Compassion for Me, Compassion for You" from 11 a.m.-noon on Monday, June 17 in classroom 4A; and "Compassion in Health Care" from 11 a.m.-noon on Monday, June 24 in classroom 6A.
